Franchising: a set number of teams sign contracts with a tournament organizer, receive royalties from merchandise sales rather than prize money, no eliminations from the league, franchises are divided into set regional cleavages (e.g. 12 North American spots, 8 Asian spots, etc.) Open: tournament organizer hosts open qualifiers in which any team can participate. The strongest teams will continue to guarantee spots in future tournaments via "breaking" to playoffs, etc., while teams which have been routinely losing are dropped out of the league for new up-and-coming rosters that inevitably qualify over them in relegation matches.
